| Hey everyone...
Sorry I haven't posted in awhile... I've been on MySpace. www.myspace.com/ate_the_no_jeans
I feel great! I met the most wonderful girl, and her name is Taylor. We've been together for more than two months. I'll talk about her later for something awful has come up...
I feel horrible... My cat that I loved so much died last night around 2:45-3:15. I wasn't paying attention to the time really... For some reason she fell over in my brother's room, and then my mom brought her over to the living and held her. Dorcas, my cat, was making harsh wheezing sounds when she would breath. Every so often she would spasm, and with each convulsion her condition would deteriorate... Finally with the last spasm, she stretched and fell asleep forever. My mom believes that she had a stroke that affected her neurological system. She didn't show any pain other than her convulsions and hard breathing. The whole time I was sure that she was going to get better. She became more responsive as the night wore on... But the last one did her in... She was about 10 years old... I had her more than half my life... She was my cat; or rather as my mom says, I was her boy. She was the best cat in the world. When people say that animals don't have souls, they're wrong. If they would have met my cat, they would swear she was a person. She always new that something was wrong. Whenever anyone of us were sick, she'd be there resting next to us and be caring. I wish she was here now to comfort me in my sadness... But I know that she's in a better place now. Knowing her, she's probably playing with my brother Thomas.
-Ate
In case you don't know, Thomas is my brother who died when he was two months old of S.I.D.S. (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)This was when I was five. | comments: Leave a comment |

| Hello everybody!
Well, the verdict is in, and we can go ahead the party as planned. Actually, we can have 3 of them. Er, 4, if you count the Halo 1 party.
Seeing as how people might be busy Thanksgiving weekend, we'll just have a small Halo party I guess. It would have to be Friday night and carrying on into the day or something. It's a no biggie; but if you are able to come, please come by and have fun.
Now, onto the bigger stuff. We need to get dates and times for the parties. We can have one in the Christmas week. It obviously can't be the end of that week for it is Christmas itself. So it would have to between the 20th and the 23rd. Also, we could have another party on New Years Eve. I know this is another important holiday and you might already have plans. That's alright. But it's still open for Halo 2. We can have another party in early January, like the first two weeks. So, reply back and tell me when would be the best days for you all.
Oh, by the way, I have sucumbed to the X-Box. Not that that's a bad thing. Next week I'm going to get the X-Box and a copy of Halo 2. Oh darn. I was at first going to get PS2 so that my brother and I could LAN together our PlayStations and play SOCOM II. Ah-well, I get I'm going to have to get two controllers now for us. Hmm, or I could be really mean and only get myself a controller. ^-^ Eeeexxxeeellent! Nah, I'm not that mean. Close, but not that mean.
Well, until next time, -Your neighborhood friendly, Até | comments: Leave a comment |
| Hello all,
During the Christmas vacation I was hoping on hosting some Halo/Halo 2 LAN parties at my house. I am currently looking for people to come. I am trying to get more than 6 X-Boxes there. I was also thinking that maybe my house might be too small, but I have the perfect sollution to that. My church has a few houses that don't have tenants. The high school house would be perfect for this. But that is only a last resort. I have enough hubs/switches at my house so you don't have to worry about that, though, if you can bring your own X-Boxes, copies of the game, your own TV, and ethernet cords, that would be dandy.
I'm going to try to get it so that there will be enough X-boxes so that there isn't four to a console, but we may have to.
Gerrit said that he would bring his, so that's one. JD said that he would bring his, so that's two. Also, JD, if Sam wants to come, that'd be cool too. The more the merrier. Ian, if you could bring yours, that'd be great. Patrick said that he would bring his, so that's three. Though, we might have to wait for his copy of Halo 2 for is brother Jay has it right now. Aaron... I don't know how he does it, but he can get X-Boxes out of mid-air. It's like he's a magician, wait, nevermind, he is.
So spread the word. I'm going to try to get as many people as we can. This will be insane.
If we want to do teams, we should get that set up as soon as possible.
Any suggestions are cool too. I want to make these fun and numerous. So anything to make them better, say if someone has a bigger house and wouldn't mind having it at his/her place, or something else is welcome. | comments: Leave a comment |

| The term "mise-en-scene" as used in film criticism refers to whatever is in the scene before the camera even starts to turn, and could apply to live theatre as well as film since it includes nothing about camera angles, lens choices, or editing. The term 'mise-en-scene' itself translates to in French a "putting-on-stage". Thus, the uses of lighting are considered in mise-en-scene, as are set design, props, costumes, makeup, staging of actors, movements of actors, etc. This being said; camera movement and angle, editing, and the story itself are not the only things having to be pertaining to mise-en-scene. The director is theoretically in control of the mise-en-scene, which some people consider more important than cinematography or editing (although relative importance actually depends upon the film and the director and their conjoined effects). We will see how this is used in German films and Japanese films and their similarities and differences, more specifically, in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari made in Germany and Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki. One of the first and most famous examples of German Expressionism, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari achieves most of its effectiveness and importance from the impressive use of mise-en-scene, primarily in the area of set design. The almost emptiness of its narrative form, while adding to the overall mysteriousness, all shows how the film is a relatively early work in the development of cinema; there is a general lack of camera movement and very little editing within scenes. Luckily, the somewhat dated elements of the film's technique are unconventional enough to keep the avant-garde feel of the picture and not to distract from the stylish visual form. Its lasting ability to interest contemporary viewers makes it easy to understand the film's wide influence, extending beyond Expressionism directly to the horror genre and to films depicting a darker side of the mind and from then till now. The way the sets are made up for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, show how the main characters are thinking by actually shaping the scenery from their minds. This still holds true today with such films as The Matrix. One of the most unforgettable characteristics of this famous decor is the number of sharply angled shapes, pointed objects and dark tones of grey as the palate used and interspersed throughout the film. These make the viewer feel somewhat unnerved and further heighten the feel of insanity in the movie. It also reminds the viewer of one of Cesare' s murders by stabbing through the use of the jagged shapes. Because there are sharp geometric shapes, there is a sense of ominous danger and evil in the town. In The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Cesare's body closely resembles the tilted trees in the forest and his arms look like the branches. Since the world around the character is portrayed as dangerous, Cesare's appearance of being almost like the surroundings themselves shows how he is treacherous and dodgy. His pale, ashen complexion and the heavy set dark circles under his eyes set look very much like the staple for most zombie or evil looking adversaries. The way Cesare advances to Jane's house by walking jerkily and as if he is stuck to a nearby wall adds to the strange mood of the film again. In the way that sharp figures are used in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari to give the sense of danger, the same thing is used for the asylum and Jane's house but for the opposite effects. There is a lack of sharp lines in both the house and the insane asylum which allows the viewer to be at ease. The more rounded and smoothed characteristics in both those sets give off a more comfortable and secure air. Although these places are more appealing than the others, the director could be giving you a sense of false security only to take it back once Cesare arrives and starts his demented show. He does this by putting the hero character in the center of a room where on the floor are radiating lines directing your attention to him. He is shown looking around for Caligari with a distressing and nervous expression on his face. This allows the audience to be scked into the movie's feel. In Japanese films, the mise-en-scene is more colorful and in some ways more thoughtful yet it has a lot of similarities with German film. In Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, or Spirited Away in the English version, is a fantasy adventure with a ten year-old girl, which starts in everyday Japan but goes somewhere very different. For young Chihiro and her family, a mysterious tunnel and haunted town lead to the Land of Spirits, inhabited by gods and monsters and ruled by the greedy witch Yu-baba. Chihiro's parents are transformed into pigs; to rescue them, she must surrender her name and serve in this world. Luckily she finds friends and allies, including the handsome but mysterious boy Haku. Initially sulky and listless, Chihiro (or Sen, as she's now called) finds inner strengths and establishes an identity in this strange world. She eventually wins her way out of that land and her parents as well through her many adventures in the Spirit World. In Spirited Away, color is used a lot to help convey the mood of the film scenes. In The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, although there wasn't color at that time, there were still shades of grey instead of color. The city, as I have mentioned, before is mainly darker shades of grey. In Yu-Baba's office, the colors are darker and what would normally be bright red in the rest of the complex is now more blood red in the office. This allows the audience to know that this place is evil. By these colors, it shows Chihiro's imminent danger if she doesn't adhere to the rules. In one shot, you see Chihiro from a bird-eye view of the room going to Yu-Baba's upper office. This shows Chihiro as a small girl and how hopelessly trapped in the Spirit World she is. Also, from this point of view, one could say that this is Yu-Baba herself looking at her without Chihiro knowing it. This shows how powerful Yu-Baba is and makes the viewer worry for Chihiro. When Chihiro is under the servitude of Yu-Baba, her uniform itself is red symbolizing how if she every goes out or tries to escape her prison, danger will be soon after her. It is a warning. One of the characters, No-Face, is a very dark spirit and it has a very white emotionless mask for a face. This is very much like Cesare in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. No-Face, from just its appearance, gives off a foreboding air and raises the tension in Spirited Away. The manner of which No-Face travels is silent and almost unnoticeable. Many people would find this unnerving, so Miyazaki used that technique of fear to again heighten the suspense in the film. In one shot, Chihiro is following Haku in a garden of red and pink flowers. The flowers are almost like a wall with one way out; the flowers are so close together. The flowers, even though they might be beautiful, are a wall from the outside world. The flowers themselves are symbolic of danger, tying in the red being a symbol of danger. Since blue is the universal opposite to red, blue is what Haku wears. He is one of the few that does. This being said, Haku is the symbol of freedom in the film. The only way for Chihiro to escape the Spirit World, she must follow Haku. In the garden of red flowers, Haku is the only means of getting out. In German and Japanese films, the mise-en-scene actually can be in some cases very similar. Although, there are some differences in their mise-en-scene. One factor is obvious, the time in which these films were made and the technical advances help the director to put across what he wants to convey. Another factor is the director themselves. Miyazaki was raised in a very ethnic and traditional background and his films suggest that. The mise-en-scene as a use of symbolism in both these films is very similar because you are dealing with feelings that everyone is slave to. They don't change and the same things effect everyone when they watch the film. Mise-en-scene is a very powerful tool. Those who know how to use it can succeed in their films. That's why these two films are chosen. They both have powerful mise-en-scene and symbolism and yet they are from totally different times and backgrounds.

| Most of us have spent some time wondering why we are here. What is the point of existence anyway? What is the answer to life, the universe, and everything? Well, you're in luck! Thanks to a supercomputer, Deep Thought, crunching away at a solution to that very question for seven and a half million years, there is an answer.
It's 42.
Why 42, you ask? Well, that's what the computer said, and as we all know, computers are always right. C'mon. Of course the computer also said that we really never knew what the question was in the first place. As descendents of the Golgafrinchans, we all should feel a small amount of guilt that we beat out the prehistoric apes who were supposed to evolve into the components of the new supercomputer that was to calculate the correct question, so it's all moot anyway. But just think, if they were allowed to evolve and live to our time, we could even better computers... Blast..
In an effort to get some insight into what the true question is, Arthur Dent (who was unaware at the time of his Golgafrinchan lineage) randomly drew Scrabble tiles to come up with "WHAT DO YOU GET IF YOU MULTIPLY SIX BY NINE". Naturally, this question is irrational but completely understandable considering the source. So there you have it.
There are very few simple truths in the Universe. Gravity, magnetism, taxes, atomic bonds... But behind the scenes of truth itself lies the most important truth of all. 42. | comments: Leave a comment |
